What is "spyware" anyway?
Spyware is a broad category of malicious software intended to intercept or take partial control of a computer's
operation without the user's informed consent. While the term taken literally suggests software that surreptitiously
monitors the user, it has come to refer more broadly to software that subverts the computer's operation for the benefit
of a third party. Spyware differs from viruses and worms in that it does not usually self-replicate. Like many
recent viruses, spyware is designed to exploit infected computers for commercial
gain.
Typical tactics furthering this goal include delivery of unsolicited pop-up
advertisements; theft of personal information (including financial information such as credit card numbers); monitoring
of Web-browsing activity for marketing purposes; or routing of HTTP requests to advertising sites. In some cases, spyware
may be used to verify compliance with a software license agreement.
Spyware Software has a range of meanings including keystroke-loggers, malware, browser
parasites, unsolicited commercial software, scumware, homepage hijackers, dialers, and
trojan horses. Microsoft Windows and Internet Explorer are the targets for most of this nasty stuff.

Spyware-Related Definitions:
Hijackers: A browser hijacker can change your browser start and search pages. A
small file may also be added that will restore the hijacked settings every time you
reboot! Hijackers often use ActiveX installation programs and exploit security holes.
Dialers: A dialer is a small program, installed using ActiveX technology. Once
installed, a dialer will use your dial-up connection to dial expensive toll numbers.
Keyloggers: These hidden programs can capture virtually everything you
do on your computer including recording all keystrokes, email messages, chat
room dialogue, web sites visited and programs run. Passwords, login information
and credit card numbers you have typed are also recorded. The spy doesn't even
need physical access to your machine because many current keyloggers send
heir logs by email FROM YOUR OWN COMPUTER.
Malware: This term is short for "malicious software" and is usually used
to describe a wide range of 'hostile' software such as viruses, Trojan Horses
and worms. It is software that is designed specifically to damage or disrupt a
system, its components or files.
